Hi HWguru,

Think I have worked it out. This is what I did.
Set local IP address on the PC to 192.168.2.9 (this is in same range as the FTP of the NAS box.
Connect NAS cat 5 to router.
Not sure if this next bit was required. TFTP32 now shows "server interfaces" 192.168.2.9 click on TFTP client tab and in host box enter 192.168.2.71 then in the port box enter 9000. With the Nas box also connected by the serial cable start Putty then power up the Nas and hit CRTL + C to get to bootloader. Followed instructions from Wiki unbricking guide and all seemed ok with various md statements finishing with md: ... autorun DONE
RAMDISK: could not find valid Ram disk image starting at 0 (presumably because I had not restored it yet) shown on screen but the last statement was a kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block (1,0)

I restored the other two images in a similar way the last ascii characters on screen for each of those seem to be GO.

Is there any indication of when the images have been successfully flashed?

I re-booted the NAS and tried to connect using the setup software at the default IP but no IP address is shown. (I did change the network on the PC to 192.168.1.9)

Hi HWguru,

Got that bit sorted and uploaded the 3 images. Still got problems. When I uploaded zImage it created vaious directories finishing with
md: ....autorun DONE then RAMDISK : couldn't find valid Ram disk image starting at 0
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: UNABLE TO MOUNT ROOT FS ON UNKNOWN-BLOCK(1,0)

I flashed the other two images - rebooted and tried with the setup software but no details are shown.

Are there any indications when each image has been successfully flashed?

I did remember to set the PC network to 192.168.1.9 to be in the same range as the default for the NAS.

Any ideas?

Regards.

No idea what you are doing.

Do you see the dots during flashing?

There is no magic ;)
Follow the guide exactly. If you flash kernel, ramdisk, hddapp it should boot again.

Hi HWguru,

Yes get that, the flash seems to go ok but after re-boot when I try to configure the NAS with the NAS setup wizard it does not seem to detect the NAS on the network - no info shown. I've tried pinging 192.168.1.1 as the default IP but comes back timed out.
I've attached the screen dumps from putty after flashing each image - do you think they look ok?

Hi,
please use the "code" button for posting logs or attach a file. I edited your posts ...

There seems to be a small problem with your serial connection. There are a lot of irregular characters.
Do you have good GND connection?

Quellcode

1
Program from 0x00400000-0x00410000 at 0x707f0000: ÿÿýÿýÿÿÿÿÿÿÿýÿýÿýýÿýÿÿý
should look like:

Quellcode

1
Program from 0x00400000-0x00410000 at 0x707f0000: .......................

Watch the complete boot sequence on the serial connection.
At the end there must appear a login prompt.
You should login as "root" and enter "ifconfig" then you see the current IP address of the box.

Hi HWguru,

Icybox_flash works and I can Telnet into Nas box bootloader.
I select option 4
=> Select: 4 Kern, 0x70020000, 0x01600000, 0x01600000
y

2: Download by TFTP
2
TFTP Server IP Address: 192.168.2.9
Image path etc etc etc- zImage
Then I get the waiting for file .... followed by the /-\ loading symbol
Raw file loaded etc etc etc

Are you sure to program Kernel code (Y/N) ? y

After that I just get a flashing underscore cursor

Ok, this is normal.
Then you have to wait until the flash process is finished. This will take some minutes.

At the end of the flash procedure you get all the output. This is different to control through serial.
The software cannot communicate while flashing because some CPU pins which are connected to the flash are shared with the PCI bus.

Success - HWguru - U the Man!!

Hi - as you can see I now have a working Dual Nas.
Followed slightly different method to the one in the unbricking guide.
Instead of entering Kern, 0x70020000, 0x01600000, 0x0160000
I entered them individually like this :-

4 <enter>
Image Name: xxxxx
Flash Address: 0x7002000 <enter>
Memory Address: 0x01600000 <enter>
Entry Point: 0x01600000

I think at this point it says something like Image Kern exists over-right (Y/N) Y

2 TFTP
2 <enter>
TFTP Server Address: 192.168.2.9

Then you get the waiting for file and eventully ........... Successfull !!
Did this for all the images and Yipee it worked. One very Happy person.

Thanks for all your help and if i can help the site in any way please let me know.

For some reason dont seem to be able to talk to box with serial lead any more, but not bothered as telnet works.
